You can afford to be cynical
Tonight Vance was telling me about a hippy who works in accounting and her love for fluorescent light bulbs. She expressed her excitement for the law that was passed that will make it so only fluorescent light bulbs will be made and sold in the U.S, even though they are full of Mercury and will only save like .003% of energy in the long run. Vance's comment was "See Josh, people are just BEGGING for fascism." That comment really got me to thinking.
I don't think I could be with Vance if he didn't have similar views on life and politics. For the sake of keeping thing alive and interesting we don't agree 100% on everything. We're both cynics, but he tends to be more pessimistic and have more of a "doom and gloom" way of looking at everything, and I tend to be more optimistic. The only way I can stand to survive in this world is by believing that there are enough people like us out there still calling the world's leaders on their bullshit.
Glenn Beck pointed out that when people think of "fascism" for some reason they still think of storm troopers coming in with guns and violently overthrowing the government kind of like the Khmer Rouge, sort of like how it still happens today in lesser-developed countries.
People tend to forget that 60 or 70 years ago Adolph Hitler took over Germany without the use of force. He took popular ideas and convinced the German people that he had the right attitude to take the country in the right direction. No one was unhappy about it to begin with. How people deny or try to forget about this still baffling to me. It's probably the most important lesson we can take from that period in history.
I don't know about you, but it sounds a little familiar to me. They failed with trying to scare us with the threats of terrorism and so now they're going to scare us with the threat of Global Warming and destruction. In California they're already going to try to control the temperature in people's houses by installing thermostats with pre-set temperature settings. We're not going to be able to use the kind of lighting we want to use. These may seem like stupid little things with really good intent, but this is how the Government gains our trust. They convince us that they have our best interests in mind and that they are only trying to protect us.
This is why you can only afford to question your government. Unless you want to be controlled. I guess it really does depend on what you are into. I on the other hand am going to continue to use bottled water, to take long showers, drive my gasoline-guzzling, carbon monoxide- spewing car everywhere, use plastic bags, buy bulk incandescent light bulbs because at this moment it is still my God-given right to do so and I am not convinced that any of those things are bad. Nothing anyone can say at this point can change my mind.
Now, onto the things that are going on in my life.
Well, my computer is fixed! Vance finally got off his lazy butt and fixed it. Supposedly I can find improvement in my 100% throw-away materials computer. I don't care at this point, just as long as it doesn't crash on me. As soon as I get my old files on here I'm going to start working on the site. It needs a layout, and perhaps even some content.
We also bought a new bed that will be delivered tomorrow. I'm so excited because it's not just a mattress and a box spring on the floor. It's an actual bed. Like 4 inches off the ground. I can hide things under my bed now. The only thing that sucks is because I was busy with the kitchen and the baby and Vance was busy with my computer, we couldn't get around to cleaning and getting the bedroom ready. I'm on my own with most of it tomorrow.
Things are going well with Deven. Did I tell you about his Dr's appointment? He did fine with his shots. He didn't get sick, he wasn't even cranky afterwards. He measured in at 16 1/2 lbs and 23 1/2 inches long. Thats 75% weight and 10% height. He's round to say the least. He has started eating rice cereal, and has started to grab and mouth toys. He has this toy rattle and that I can give to him and he tries to bring to his mouth. It's funny because he can't hold onto to it for long and if he is laying down it can be dangerous. He has dropped it on his head and hurt himself. Also, he has learned to SCREAM like a girl.
It's late and I am so very tired. I have a lot of cleaning and moving of stuff to do tomorrow. I had better get to bed.
