Degrassi: The Next Generation is the most entertaining show on tv right now. Why you ask would I be watching a teen drama that airs on a Nickelodeon spin-off channel? It's a show that actually touches on situations that are some-what believable. Everyone's not turning around and putting the moves on the person sitting next to them. The characters aren't all incredibly gorgeous, smart, rich or popular or even trying to be popular. They consist of every stereotype Canada sees. When situations turn out a little unbelievable it makes the show even better. These characters actually deal with everyday.
It has it's charming cliches and glitches here and there. Like every episode at least one character has to blow something completely out of proportion and run away while their friend stands there and watches. There are two characters with large rods shoved far up their asses and the attitudes caused by it are utilized episodically. Someone wants to do something, and generally someone has something to say against it. Friendships are severed one day and then mended the next, and every episode the character has learned a new lesson in a hurried fashion. I mean, come on, we can't fit every facet and thought put into a life-changing experience into even an hour. 80% of the time these things are what make the show great.
The best characters on the show would have to be Manny and Marco. We've seen Manny decide one day she doesn't want to be the adorable tyke with pigtails, and then come back the next day with a completely new, more controversial wardrobe. She becomes noticed by the guys of Degrassi and learns a few important rules about her friendships and her sex drive, as well as protected sex (the first episode of the new season, who knows if we'll see it in the states). Marco went through one of the most difficult transitions any young teen could ask for when he discovered his sexuality. He decided to masquerade as straight with the help of his friend Ellie, but decided it was more important he not hide and came out to his friends. He's still dealing with the reaction from Spinner, as well as his feelings for Dylan.
The other characters are predictable; Paige, Miss Popularity with a conscience; Emma, head strong with a cause; Ashley, Miss All-Around Perfection with a mind of her own; Terri, in between but coming into her own; Jimmy, insensitive jock; Ellie, No labels non-conformist; Sean, troubled youth drawn into the dark side. The show also contains many of the original cast of "Degrassi Jr High" only more-grown up versions.
I can't see the show making an incredible imapct the way Dawson's Creek has, but it's developed quite a cult following here in the states. I think that might be why it's safe to enjoy, or at least admitting to. It's the cheesy teen soap for a new generation of tweenies and damn-near-adults like myself. I'm interested in how many years this show has left under it's belt...
